What a NASCAR Race at Auto Club Speedway
I will apologize in advance for the casual tone of this week’s NASCAR post. I blame the beach. The plan was not to watch the Auto Club 400 from the Auto Club Speedway. The plan was to enjoy the beach and catch up later. I am glad it rained on the beach. I love two mile speedways, I love the beach. I don’t get to go to either often enough.
If you are an old time NASCAR fan, racing at two mile speedways lacks the excitement of short track or restrictor plate racing. If you are not paying attention to everyone’s pit strategy and car adjustments they are boring. I wrote about that a few weeks ago.
This week at Fontana for the Auto Club 400 every NASCAR fan was expecting the typical. We were not expecting a last lap pass for the win nor a wreck. We got that and even more drama.
This may just become a running theme this year but on Twitter fans were fired up about what Joey Logano did to Denny Hamlin. I hate that Denny got into the inside wall, is hurt and will possibly miss races but you just don’t see close racing like that on a two mile speedway. Yes that was close racing; Joey did not intentionally wreck Denny.
As race fans, if that is any indication of what is to come this season on the big tracks, this year will be the best ever. There is some irony in that the driver that was fined by NASCAR for criticizing the new car is one who provided the best racing to date. We all hope Denny Hamlin gets better and back to racing soon.
We have a week off for Easter and then back to Martinsville Speedway. I am looking forward to that race more than ever.
