Martinsville Speedway STP Gas Booster 500 Prerace Notes
The Go Daddy Chevrolet team of Danica Patrick found something they didn’t like in the engine and decided to change it. Per the NASCAR rule book she will give up her 32nd starting spot and will start the race from the rear of the field.
In final practice Saturday, Clint Bowyer was able to post a lap of 97.018 MPH better than Jimmie Johnson. He starts 15th but showed that if he can get some track position he has a car that can challenge.
Ford drivers Carl Edwards (start 9th) and Greg Biffle (22nd) were right behind with speeds of 96.293 and 96.161. They also have cars that can contend. Dale Earnhardt Jr., starting 17th will have some work to do to get to the front.
In the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race it became apparent that the new tires Goodyear brought to the track which the Cup cars also use fall off. This puts racing back into the hands of the driver. What that means is drivers who overdrive there car and are seemingly dominating the race will probably lose to one who does not abuse their tires. Johnny Sauter did just that to win.
Matt Crafton who finished second said, “I know Goodyear catches flack sometimes, but they brought one hell of a race tire for this place. It is one awesome race tire. It’s the best race tire I’ve ever been on at Martinsville. If you drive it hard early, it goes away. If you save your stuff and just don’t slip the tires, it will come in at the end and that’s what Johnny (Sauter) did. He was just on the other end of the stick.”
The race is 500 laps, If you cannot get to Martinsville Speedway, the race will be broadcast live on FOX on Sunday, April 7th at 1 PM ET.
