Dover is a Great Place for Carl Edwards to Beat Jimmie Johnson

Andrew Weber-USA TODAY Sports

Carl Edwards is second in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Standings behind Jimmie Johnson. What a better time for those two to battle it out then a track where they both lead the statistics.  Carl Edwards, Jimmie Johnson and the rest of NASCAR are at Dover International Speedway for the FedEx 400 benefiting Autism Speaks.

Dover International Speedway is a one mile true oval racetrack.  The track surface is concrete and there is 24 degrees of banking in the corners with 9 degrees on the front and backstretch.  The race is 400 miles or 400 laps.

Carl Edwards doesn’t have that great of a driver rating compared to Jimmie Johnson. In fact Matt Kenseth has a better rating then Carl does.  That doesn’t mean Carl isn’t good at this track. Carl Edwards has an average finish of 8.3 just barely edging out Jimmie Johnson at 8.6. The next best is Matt Kenseth at 12.6.

Last year in this race Carl Edwards had the worst finish of his career finishing 26th. He rebounded in the fall continuing his run of top ten finishes with a fifth place run.

Carl Edwards dominated concrete racetracks when he was in the other series to the point where he was called “Concrete Carl”. He hasn’t been that dominant in the Cup series.  Now would be a great time to get that title back and go win a championship.

Dover is the most physically demanding oval we go to,” said Edwards. “It’s fast and if you have trouble, there’s nowhere to hide. We have run extremely well there as a company and I still smile when I remember Matt (Kenseth), Greg (Biffle) and I racing there for the win a few years ago. We plan on getting Subway their second win of the year on Sunday.

If you can’t get to Dover International Speedway the race will be broad cast on Fox at 12:30 PM Sunday June 2nd. It will be the last race of this season for Fox. Next week the Cup series will be broadcast by TNT.
