The newest member of Penske Racing in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series young driver Joey Logano is still chasing down a Chase for the Sprint Cup spot for NASCAR’s postseason in 2013. Logano came over to Penske Racing this offseason to join a team graced with reigning champion Brad Keselowski. Back with Joe Gibbs Racing Logano wasn’t close to tracking down a Chase berth, but he has been much more solid this year on the track.
At Pocono Raceway Logano was hoping for a win at a track where he won last year with Joe Gibbs Racing, but he instead ended up with a tenth place finish meaning he has made the top ten in the last three races of the season. This brought him up to 16th in the points standings sitting behind Kurt Busch in 15th.
To find his way to the Chase, this young driver will have to get a win or two to beat the rest of the hefty competition for the wild card position. Unfortunately, looking immediately ahead to the race weekend at Michigan International Speedway, Logano doesn’t have a sparkling record and will struggle to grab even a top ten.
Looking toward Sonoma, Logano may have a chance where he won a pole in 2011 and finished in the top ten in the last two races there. To gain a Chase berth Logano will have to be absolutely consistent and take a win if he wants in on the playoffs of NASCAR this year. Logano may be a long shot for this berth, but with the right luck he can take it.
