The last two weeks have not been kind for Dale Earnhardt Jr.as drivers get closer to the chase. At Watkins Glen, Earnhardt Jr. got into a wreck in the final stages of the race that left him finishing 30th. Last week at Michigan International Speedway, Earnhardt Jr. finished 36th. How much concern should there be with the No. 88 team?
“There are guys in worse positions than us,” noted Earnhardt, who is seventh in the Sprint Cup points standings via espn.com. “We ain’t got to outrun just one guy; there’s a lot of guys. And all of them have got to have clean races, just like we do. I think we’ll be all right.”
Earnhardt Jr. is only 16 points ahead of the 10th spot in the standings, which means a bad wreck early in the race at Bristol Motor Speedway could see the 88 team on the outside of the chase. Earnhardt Jr. has not won a race this season, but at Bristol they have been consistent so things are in their favor.
“We’re not an 11th-place team,” Earnhardt said after the race at Michigan via espn.com. “We’re a top-5 team. We’re consistent. We’re more consistent than most. We’ve just got to shake this luck, whatever is going on. It’s something different every time.”
I think Earnhardt Jr. will be in the chase. There’s something about the 88 team whether it is their swagger or just their overall consistency over the course of this season that gives a vibe that they will be fine. But with that being said, the 88 team is in no position to be happy with themselves at the moment because all it takes is one race to change everything in the chase picture.
