With Jimmie Johnson suffering a DNF at Bristol Motor Speedway and crashing at Michigan International Speedway two weeks ago, it is safe to say that he isn’t entering the chase the way he wants.
Johnson still holds the Sprint Cup points lead, but it is only 18 points ahead of Clint Bowyer. Johnson still has an impressive four wins on the season, but Matt Kenseth now holds the most wins this season with five.
Is the championship really slipping away from Johnson? I highly doubt it. Even the very best drivers in the history of sport have had slumps here and there. Nobody can escape it, but right now, Johnson is just fortunate to still be in the lead of the pack.
“Luckily, we had a big points lead that we can kind of deal with right now,” Johnson noted via Espn.com. “We’ve locked into the Chase. We certainly want to clean things up and have some great finishes rolling into the Chase.”
Johnson heads to a track this coming Sunday at Atlanta Motor Speedway where he has three wins, but hasn’t won there since 2007. The five-time Sprint Cup champion is struggling right now, and I’m sure nobody in the garage is feeling sorry for him. The 48 team understands that and they are just buying time for now until the real fun begins.
