Time for the Fork?

I didn’t want to write about the NASCAR Chase for the Sprint Cup this week but when ESPN resurrected their “Fork” bit, I just had to go there. After one race it just doesn’t seem fair or warranted to “Stick a Fork in a Driver because they are done”.

I got caught off guard when they, as Rusty Wallace said “Forked!” drivers after one Chase race. Nicole Briscoe stuck a fork in Dale Earnhardt Jr., Rusty Wallace stuck a fork in Clint Bowyer, Brad Daugherty stuck a fork in Joey Logano and Ray Evernham stuck a fork in Greg Biffle.  Time may prove them right but it is just too early for that, especially with Talladega Superspeedway and Martinsville Speedway still to go in the Chase. In fact this week at Dover International Speedway might also be a challenge for some of them.

So how did our premature “Forks” do at New Hampshire Motor Speedway? Well Greg Biffle finished the race third and is now fifth in the standings 38 points back. Joey Logano finished the race fourteenth and is now in twelfth place in the standings 69 points back solidly in “Fork” land. Clint Bowyer finished the race seventeenth and is now tenth in the standings 48 points back, right on the edge of “Fork” land. Dale Earnhardt Jr. finished a respectable sixth and is eleventh in the standings 62 points back, definitely in “Fork” land.

So who are they likely to put a “Fork” in this week. Well most certainly Kasey Kahne, my pick to win the Chase, who had a bizarre spin and even more bizarre interview after the spin. He is in thirteenth place 71 points back. Unfortunately, he is now the leader of the “Forks”!

They might argue that Ryan Newman, who is only one point better than already “Forked” Clint Bowyer, deserves to be added to the club. What about the other drivers’ fourth to eighth? There is only six points separating them all.

Matt Kenseth, Kyle Busch and Jimmie Johnson would appear to have the Chase in Hand, in fact I wouldn’t be surprised if while I am writing this someone is writing an article titled “And now there were Three”. The thing is, there are still those three races mentioned above and as Kasey Kahne could attest, anything can happen to put you into the land of the “Fork”!
