Dale Earnhardt Jr. is 52 points back of first place in the Sprint Cup standings with zero wins on the season as it looks like his championship chances are just about over. He’s not eliminated, but what has Earnhardt Jr. done that would make him think he could reel off multiple wins in the final four races in the chase?
Can Earnhardt gain some momentum? He has the parts to do it at Hendrick Motorsports, but He doesn’t seem to think the momentum will start at Martinsville as he noted via Dalejr.com.
“Martinsville isn’t quite the momentum racetrack you think. If you get some clear room and a bit of space between you and your competitors, you can get into a rhythm where you’re doing things repetitively from corner to corner that are working and that give your car speed. So it’s not really about momentum as it is about repetition.”
Martinsville is a tricky track. It recent years, track position at Martinsville is probably greater than at any track on the Sprint Cup circuit. If you want to win a race, you have to pray that your car has the inside lane and not the outside lane in any circumstance. When you are stuck on the outside lane, it doesn’t matter how good your car is. You will get stuck there, as you can go from second place, to 15th place in a matter of moments.
But at the end of the day, Earnhardt needs to make it happen whether he’s on the inside or outside lane if he wants to keep his championship hopes alive.
