NASCAR's Gene Haas Looking To Start Formula 1 Team

Gene Haas is a man with high ambitions and very deep pockets. He currently fields four cars in  the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series as co-owner of Stewart-Haas Racing (2011 Cup champions). The organization recently underwent a risky (because of how late in the year the plans came together) expansion project, spearheaded by Haas in order to facilitate a fourth car. Tony Stewart, Kurt Busch, Kevin Harvick and Danica Patrick make up their driver lineup for this year.

It was reported by a German news outlet that Haas is already working on plans for a new endeavor. He wants to field a team in the most popular motorsport on the planet, Formula 1. There are currently three groups vying for the chance to be F1’s 12th team in 2015, and all will have to go through the FIA evaluation process. They don’t take adding new teams to the grid lightly.

Haas has a couple things already going for him if this team does come to fruition. His company is the world’s largest manufacturer of CNC machines and he owns a top of the line wind tunnel in Concord that has been utilized by F1 teams in the past. It appears that the rave team would be based in Charlotte with cars built by Dallara and engines and transmissions supplied by Ferrari.

The last US based team to enter Formula 1 had a rough go of it. By rough go of it, I mean they never got to grid. USF1 attempted to field cars in the 2010 season, but it didn’t work out for a variety of reasons and they never started race. Haas did release a statement confirming the news, but gave no more insight than saying, “there will be more details in the coming weeks.”
