NASCAR: Budweiser Duel is the Last Chance Into the Daytona 500

Sam Sharpe-USA TODAY Sports

The days until the Daytona 500 are winding down and so are the chances to race in the Great American race. Drivers only have one more opportunity to make into Sunday’s race on Primetime Thursday night at the Budweiser Duel.

During Sunday’s Daytona 500 qualifying session Austin Dillon and Martin Truex Jr. have secured their starting spot into the race. Dillon won the pole with Truex joining him on the front row. Along with the front row spots now confirmed for the race, a few other drivers are in the race by their qualifying times, 2013 point standings and past champion provisional.

Greg Biffle, Carl Edwards, Ryan Newman and Brad Keselowski made it in on time. Last year’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion and defending race winner made in on points along with Matt Kenseth, Kyle Busch, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jeff Gordon and Clint Bowyer. Tony Stewart currently holds onto the champions provisional. Although these drivers are locked into the race, they have yet to know their starting spot.

On Thursday, the rest of the Cup Series field will have the chance to race their way to a good starting spot and for a couple of teams they will attempt to race their way into the Daytona 500. With close to 50 teams making qualifying rans on Sunday for the final 43-car field, the Duel will be their last attempt.

Going into the duels, it should provide some good racing, as some teams are not guaranteed a spot in the race. It will also provide a first look into some of the new drivers in the series this year, as well as the debut of some drivers with their new teams.

Heading into one of the most anticipated seasons, teams should be giving it their all to make into the season opener.
