While I don't agree with a fan flipping off an athlete, or vice versa, in the racing world, it's extremely common. At a dirt track race on Saturday night, a fan in the stands flipped Tony Stewart the bird and Stewart went into the stands and confronted him. The fan reportedly happened to be a cop.
