While the Dallas Mavericks have had an extremely strong season thus far, perhaps their must impressive feat has been their knack for ending large winning streaks by their opponents. None bigger was the one tonight on the road against the Miami Heat, who were going for their 13th straight victory.
The Mavs improved their road record to 9-1 (22-5 overall) in the back and forth affair. The game was characterized by many one-sided runs by both teams, but sixth-man Jason Terry was Mr. Fourth Quarter, scoring all 19 of his points in the final frame to bring home a 98-96 victory. The win was the latest in a barrage of impressive wins Dallas has posted this year as the Heat had been winning almost every game by double digits.
While Dallas has been a streak buster of other team’s all season long (San Antonio, Utah, Boston and New Orleans have also ran into Dirk Nowitzki and the hot Mavericks), they could have been looking at a 16-game winning streak themselves right now. The win over Miami was their 15th win in the past 16 games, with their only loss coming after blowing a huge lead against Milwaukee last week. Their stifling defense along with the strong play of Nowitzki on offense has continued to be one of the most lethal combinations in the NBA this year.
The Mavs do not have much time to celebrate their big win tonight as they will stay in state to play Orlando tomorrow night. The Magic just recently made a couple of trades and the new lineup seemed to lack chemistry in tonight’s loss against Atlanta. Dallas should therefore have a good chance of improving on their league best road record as the Magic try to mesh.
