Mavericks Missing Their MVP Heading Into Divison Showdown Tonight

The Dallas Mavericks were looking just about unstoppable on a nightly basis heading into the end of the 2010 calendar year. That was until their leading scorer and MVP candidate Dirk Nowitzki suffered a knee injury on Monday night, forcing him out of that game and the next game against Toronto.

Dallas was able to hold off Oklahoma City on Monday before losing Tuesday to the lowly Raptors, only it’s second loss of the season. However, where they will really miss Nowitzki is in tonight’s contest against division rival San Antonio. The Spurs have the best record in the NBA but the Mavs really could have closed the gap with another victory against them this season.

The Spurs have been one of the best offensive teams in the league this season and Dallas will struggle to score enough points to stay with them without Dirk tonight. He shot 12-14 from the floor and scored 26 points in the team’s first meeting, a Dallas victory. Yes, the Mavs have been an elite defensive team, but the likes of Parker and Ginobili are pretty much not slowed down by anybody for a 48-minute period.

So the Spurs have a very good chance at winning this game, but luckily for Dallas it’s just one game in the middle of a long season. The Mavs need to be careful with their superstar for the long haul as they set their sights on a championship. If he’s not healthy, they won’t be going anywhere.
