With the Orlando Magic coming into Madison Square Garden tonight to face the New York Knicks, you can not help but wonder what the future holds for center Dwight Howard. Is there a legitimate chance that Howard winds up with the Knicks?
Nobody knows what the future holds but it is always fun to speculate. With superstar players holding the power in the NBA over their teams nowadays anything can happen. Dwight Howard can pick a destination and order the Orlando Magic to work out a deal with that team – if they do not comply to his demands then he will simply leave during free agency and his team will receive nothing in return for his talents.
We saw both of these actions take place very recently. LeBron James and Chris Bosh left their teams via free agency and headed to the Miami Heat, leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers and Toronto Raptors with nothing. On the other hand, Carmelo Anthony willed his way out of Denver and forced the Nuggets to trade him to the New York Knicks, his preferred destination.
Rumors have the Orlando Magic, Los Angeles Lakers, and New York Knicks as front-runners for Dwight Howard. While fans in Orlando are trying to woo him and management has been very aggressive in order to keep him happy, nobody knows if Howard really wants to stay in Orlando.
Howard is perceived as a showman, a pleaser, and someone who likes the big stage. This makes Los Angeles a premier destination for him, in a huge market that has a history of winning. Howard can play alongside Pau Gasol and Kobe Bryant, creating a “Hollywood Big Three” that would be a force in the NBA. It is expected that for this to work, the Lakers would have to trade Andrew Bynum, who they covet dearly and would not include in trade talks for Carmelo Anthony earlier this season.
Nobody knows if Howard really considers New York as a legitimate destination for when he hits free agency, but a story has recently been broken that suggests he does.
The Knicks are definitely looking to add another star to play alongside Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire, and Dwight Howard would propel the Knicks into being a title contender. Varying reports, however, have the Knicks also interested in free agents Chris Paul and Deron Williams, and they can clearly only bring in one of these players. Nobody really knows who the Knicks prefer – I have a feeling that they will “prefer” the player who shows the greatest interest in coming here.
The collective bargaining agreement will be crucial, since it will tell teams just how much they are allowed to spend and help them prepare for the future. If a team wants to be a player for either Paul, Williams, or Howard then maybe they will have to shed some salary before these players become available.
Dwight Howard is the best center in the NBA, hands down. Not only is he a great defensive player, a great shot blocker, and an excellent rebounder, but Howard has developed a nice offensive game since he began working with Patrick Ewing.
Howard ultimately controls his own future. Whether you like it or not, the superstar NBA players hold more power than their teams and they can do whatever they want. If you are an organization, if your star player threatens to leave then you will comply to his demands and trade him. You can not risk letting him go without receiving anything in return.
Can Dwight Howard become a New York Knick? Absolutely, there is a definite possibility that this could happen one day. Will Dwight Howard become a New York Knick? That is a different story and we do not know the answer – we will have to wait and see what happens.
