Dirk Nowitzki: The 7 Foot More Scary Version of Larry Bird
OK, so that is a stretch. A colossal stretch. Dirk Nowitzki is really good, easily the best International player the NBA has seen, but he isn’t Bird. Still, that said, he can do things that Bird couldn’t do. He makes shots Bird couldn’t make. I know that sounds like a stretch, but Nowitzki has 3″ on Larry Bird and his lanky frame enables him to bend and twist and get off some really awkward, yet effective, shots.
Bird was a lot more straight forward. He got it done, but he never put up some of the implausible shots Dirk does. Bird did a lot of other things far better than Dirk, as well, which only further makes the comparison unfair. No forward has passed as well before or since Bird and probably no one ever will. Bird saw the court better than most point guards and his ridiculously high basketball IQ enabled him to see plays before they developed.
Dirk will never be placed on the same level as Bird. He’s still gunning for his FIRST championship. But one thing is for sure: Dirk Nowitzki would have excelled even in the heyday of the NBA, the early 80s through the mid 90s. He’s winding up an excellent career, but given his style of play it’s plausible he could have as many as four or five more high level seasons in him. This still may be the best chance the Mavs get. So Dirk isn’t really a 7 foot more scary version of Bird, the title drew you in anyway…
