SLAM Online had a very interesting article this morning. Kevin Garnett of the Boston Celtics was on the Dan Patrick Show and revealed that before he was traded to Boston, he was almost a Laker (report here). Garnett says the bitterness between Kobe Bryant and Phil Jackson kept him from joining the Lake Show.
Although hindsight is 20/20, this is a very interesting quote. The last four years in the NBA would be completely different. If the Lakers get Garnett, maybe Boston moves in and gets Pau Gasol. Would both teams have met in the Finals still? Would LA have made the Finals three years in a row with KG, considering how hurt he’s been? Could have LeBron had an easier road to the Finals and maybe steal one while in Cleveland? Would the Decision ever happened?
All of these are great questions. We will probably never know the outcome of them, however. It does provide good water cooler talk. It’s not often that moves that weren’t made could change the last four years of outcomes. Garnett and Kobe could have been the next dynasty or they could’ve imploded before they got off the ground. As an NBA fan, I’m happy with the way things turned out, but Garnett in LA could have been a treat for basketball fans everywhere.
