When Michael Jordan retired for the last time everyone thought the NBA was over as we knew it. There could never be another MJ and no one will ever even come close. Plenty of players have come into the league with high expectations to be the next best thing that could take the game over but few of them are even worthy of being mention in the same breath as Jordan.
LeBron James probably had the highest expectations coming into the league but he has yet to follow in the footsteps of the Great One. When it comes down to it there is really only one player in the eyes of the NBA and Jordan himself who even comes close. The following was tweeted by Roman Lazenby, a man who is writing a book on Michael Jordan.
“Kobe’s ultimate competition is MJ. That’s why MJ watches him. MJ made people think what he was doing wasn’t human. Ditto the Kobester.”
“I never said Kobe was better than MJ. MJ just told me Kobe’s the only one to have done the work, to deserve comparison.”
It really doesn’t come as a surprise that Jordan thinks Kobe is the only player that is similar to him. Bryant has the same insane work ethic and is a fierce competitor just like MJ. He also has five NBA championship rings compared to Jordan’s six. Kobe is 3,962 points less than Jordan’s 32,292 points scored and needs to play a little over two more seasons to surpass him.
There will never be another Jordan just like there will probably never be another Bryant. The two players have many comparisons but that is where the line is drawn. They are the best player of their respected decade and there is no need to go any further than that.
