One simple answer to a question asked to Dwight Howard has sent shock waves through Celtics Nation. When asked if he would consider playing in Boston next season, his answer was a very simple yes. That yes sent the internet on fire with every Celtics site running some kind of piece that Dwight Howard has finally come out and said that he would consider wearing green next season. If the Celtics were to land Howard, they would have a tremendous centerpiece to build a championship team around. It would at the very least keep the Celtics competitive long after KG, Ray Allen, and Paul Pierce ride off into the sunset. However, before people get too far into their delusions of grandeur allow me to be the bearer of wretched news. Dwight Howard is not coming to Boston.
Before die hard Celtics fans crucify me and try to tell me that Danny AInge is a great sales man and he pulled off the miracle in landing KG and Ray Allen allow me to remind you of a few very important facts. These facts are why Boston has close to zero shot at landing the game changing center. These facts are not subject to change either.
The first issue is in order to get Howard the man must reach free agency. Orlando is not going to let that happen. They already paid the price once with future Hall of Fame center Shaquille O’Neal. Shaq once dominated in Orlando before leaving for the Lakers. The Magic did not deal him and got zero in return for a man that would go on to be a big part of four NBA title teams. They are not going to let that happen again. They will deal Howard before the deadline. No team will deal for Howard without a contract extension in place. I cannot say I blame them because Orlando will be asking for a king’s ransom and no one would want to give up that kind of talent with a chance that they will only have a him for a half a season.
The next issue is for those that feel that Ainge can pull off a miracle trade. Let me make this fact perfectly clear right now. The Celtics have zero pieces that Orlando would want. The Magic do not want Rajon Rondo. They do not view Avery Bradley, JaJuan Johnson, or any other young Celtic as a future star. They do not want to get older talent like KG or Ray Allen in return. Could AInge find another partner and deal one of these pieces for pieces Orlando wants? I am just not seeing this either. When teems were calling Boston for the “Big Three” they were looking to give four quarters for a dollar. The Celtics wanted dollar players and that is why Ainge never even thought about pulling the trigger.
The bottom line is I would love to see Howard in green. However, I am not reserving my Dwight Howard Celtics jersey on nBA.com just yet. Howard just saying that he would consider Boston is at least a solid consolation because it shows that this organization is viewed as top notch now unlike during the “Thanks Dad” dark ages of the Gaston era. At least that is what I am telling myself as a Celtics fan.
