Report: Dwight Howard To Decide Fate Of Otis Smith And Stan Van Gundy

By Riley Schmitt

I’m pretty sure the Orlando Magic have reached the point of no return with Dwight Howard.  In their latest attempt to placate the soon to be free agent center, Ric Bucher (as seen in this CBS report) is reporting that the Magic will let Howard determine the fate of GM Otis Smith and head coach Stan Van Gundy if he signs an extension.

One source close to the situation told ESPN The Magazine’s Ric Bucher that the Magic have promised Howard that they will add a quality player before Thursday’s deadline and that Howard can decide the fate of both GM Otis Smith and coach Stan Van Gundy at the end of the season if he signs an extension.

This won’t end well.  When you start bending to the whims of your players, you’ve lost the battle.  Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan could do this, because they have a pedigree.  Howard is basically a goof with no idea about what he wants.  His giant kid personality isn’t an act, it’s actually who he is.

I hope Orlando doesn’t follow through on this, because it’ll be a long time before the Magic gain respectability in the eyes of many NBA fans.
