Boston Celtics Rajon Rondo And Offense Lay A Stinker In Toronto

By Rob Nelson

The Boston Celtics have three games in three nights on their docket. The good news is it was against cupcake teams like Toronto. The problem is the fact that they are playing bad teams is also a double edged sword. The team just does not seem to put the effort in against the bad teams of the NBA like they do agains the elite teams. This fact is especially true on the offensive side of the ball. This was the case tonight as Boston blew a very winnable game against a very bad Raptors team.

Boston Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo and company just looked too lazy most of the game. The team came out and played hard in the first and took an early lead and then rallied very late to make the end of the game interesting, but for most of the game the offense was wretched at best. The starters came out of the game in the second quarter and the back of the bench was used. They were ineffective and then the starters were forced to come back into the game and they looked like their attacking style was gone.

The team would look to hit the three ball instead of attacking a very bad Raptors interior defense that has too many new pieces on the perimeter to really stop them from getting to the hoop. The jump shots were just too tempting as Rondo hit guys for jumpers rather than guys cutting to the basket. Granted other than Avery Bradley no one else on Boston was cutting to the hoop. Rondo was also at fault as he was way too pass happy and he passed up too many guaranteed points in the paint the few times he did drive to the basket.

The loss is on Rajon Rondo. Rondo is the engine and when he plays with no energy, the team plays with no energy. Rondo has to get his guys in better position to score. He has to look for the drive to the hoop every possession in order to get the defense collapsed and force his teammates to move without the ball. Rondo dictates the tempo and since he did not set the tone, the team did not follow.

The fact is Rondo admitted before the game that he was tired. The effort he has given the last few games has been super human. His minutes have been way up and even a young guy like Rondo will get gassed. I just hope he can get a second wind for tomorrow’s game against the Nets. If he does not Boston will be in serious trouble. Remember Go Green Or Go Home!!!!!!
