Boston Celtics Brandon Bass And Role Players Need To Step Up

By Rob Nelson

There was one glaring area that the Miami Heat out played the Boston Celtics in game one of the NBA Eastern Conference Finals that most people are failing to point out. The simple fact is the stars of this series are going to cancel each other out to a degree. This means that role players need to step up and give their teams a boost. In game one Miami had a clear edge in this category. in order to truly compete in this series Boston needs a lot more production from their role guys like Brandon Bass.

Miami got great shooting from Mike Miller (8 points) solid defense and double digit scoring from Shane Battier (10 points), and solid play form Mario Chalmers (9 points). Boston got a terrible 4-11 shooting for eight points out of Bass, a wretched game from Mickael Pietrus as he not only missed all his shots, but missed all except one of his free throws to go along with poor defense, and an OK defense, but not much offense from Keyon Dooling (3 points on 1-3 shooting). The only role guy for Boston that played solid was Greg Stiemsma with 6 points and 4 rebounds. Being out played this badly is not going to get the job done.

The role guys for Boston need to step up. They do not have to give much, but more they at least have to match Miami’s production in that area. Brandon Bass needs to have his jump shot going and give Boston double digit scoring. Mickael Pietrus needs to not only bury a few long range bombs, but play more solid defense on LeBron. Pietrus is not going to stop LeBron, but he has to at least make him work. Keyon Dooling played great energy defense and that must continue, but he needs to work as hard at the offensive end to get open for his shot and look to attack the basket.

If Boston gets the kind of production from these guys that they are capable of, then they will be in great shape for the rest of this series. Boston needs a hero like PJ Brown in the 08 Cleveland series or a big outside shot like Eddie House in the 08 Finals. I believe that these men will come through and Boston will be tied in this series heading into game three. Remember Go Green Or Go Home!!!!!!!
