In a shocking development, New York Knicks players Jeremy Lin and Steve Novak were granted Early Bird Rights. This move allows the Knicks to re-sign both players without having to use their mid-level exception. This allows the Knicks to use that to sign another player.
This is a shocking move. I do not believe that many people expected that the NBPA would win this case. This means those two are eligible for more money while staying with the Knicks. This offseason just got a lot better for the Knicks, who will not have to worry about letting Lin go. They can pay him more money than anyone else, which is huge.
The monetary amount does also not affect the salary cap, so the Knicks should be jumping up and down. This move is huge for them to keep their core together. Sure, it is a flawed core with almost zero chance to win a title, but they will still make the playoffs. I think a lot of Knicks fans would take that after the last couple of years.
Jeremy Lin could develop into a very good point guard. The spotlight of NY seems to be perfect for him and he can continue to work on his game in the big city. The Knicks have to love all the merchandising money coming from Lin.
Plus, we still get to watch Novak’s championship belt celebration after he makes three pointers. Can never have enough of that in our lives.
