Boston Celtics Fab Melo Is Latest Big Man Project: Great Value Pick By Ainge

By Rob Nelson

The Boston Celtics weakness in size and rebounding was an achilles heal in the 2011-2012 NBA season. How many times did Boston give up terrible offensive rebounds or fail to get an offensive board to keep a possession alive? The answer is far to many for Celtics fans. The Boston Celtics always seem to be searching for size even when Kendrick Perkins was entrenched as the starter. When Perkins left town Boston also lost the one guy that was a perfect defensive compliment to Kevin Garnett. The Celtics just lacked the guy that could punish a team for trying to make a living in the paint. If one were to state that the Boston Celtics needed to draft a center in the 2012 NBA Draft, it would be an understatement. The great news is Boston got lucky and Syracuse center Fab Melo and his great frame and defensive skills were around at pick number 22 for Boston to grab.

Fab Melo is a monster. The seven foot 255 pound monster has great defensive skills. He can block shots and control the middle by using his size. People complain about the zone that he played in Syracuse and how that will translate into the more traditional NBA defense, but that just means that he learned to play great help defense. He should fit in very well in Boston’s defensive oriented team concept. Melo is also a great rebounder. He is not afraid to get dirty in the paint. his is huge for a Boston team that struggled in the paint to rebound.

Melo’s alleged issues should also vanish in Boston. The first is the work ethic questions. He will have a great coach in Doc Rivers in his ear and of course no one motivates his teammates more than Kevin Garnett. This means I am not worried about his motor. His offensive skills are also not as bad as people think. He does need work in his post game, but that can be taught. He has a solid 18 foot jump shot and good touch around the rim. When one has Rajon Rondo as his point guard, all you have to do is expect the ball and go straight up with it when you are receive it wide open (Something Kendrick Perkins could not do).

The bottom line is Boston had a need and addressed it with Fab Melo. It may take a couple of years, but I believe that this pick will pay off for Boston. I believe that he can bring the size that Boston needs. This is great news in Boston. Remember Go Green Or Go Home!!!!
