Joe Johnson is no longer a member of the Atlanta Hawks. Unless things fall apart at the last minute, the overpaid guard is a member of the Brooklyn Nets. The Nets will send Jordan Farmar, Johan Petro, DeShawn Stevenson, Anthony Morrow, and Jordan Williams to the Hawks, plus a protected pick.
It was originally thought that this deal hinged on Deron Williams. However, that is not the case as the deal will be done either way. I expect that nothing will stop this deal from happening at this point in time.
Frankly, I am shocked by this deal. The Hawks do not gain anything of value but they do get out from under one crappy contract. The Nets add another star player and this probably ends their pursuit of Dwight Howard. This is a bad thing for Howard, because he said he only will re-sign with the Nets. Sorry Dwight. You whined too much and it bit you.
This deal is a win for both teams. The Hawks have a ton of cap space now and their roster is not stuck in basketball hell. The Nets might actually be a playoff team, which should give Williams more of a reason to sign with the team. It was an aggressive move, especially because Howard is being a giant baby once again.
I expect this deal to be completed soon as Williams will be a fool to not re-sign with the Nets. It is a great move for the Nets, even with the bad contract. They have a made a play to become a good team once again. That is better than spending the last two years being an embarrassment. The new ownership is finally showing all the money that they are sitting.
