Prior to the beginning of free agency, Los Angeles Lakers point guard Ramon Sessions opted out of his $4.5 million player option to stay with the team through the 2012-2013 season. Once July 1 struck, the youngster who was once considered the Lakers’ point guard of the future was free to sign with the team of his choice.
Although the market was initially cold for the five-year NBA veteran, teams began showing interest in Sessions the past couple of days as the other top free agent point guards got scooped up.
The latest team to join the race for Sessions is the Houston Rockets, who are in need of a point guard after trading Kyle Lowry to the Toronto Raptors.
Among the other teams who have reportedly reached out to Sessions are the Lakers, Dallas Mavericks and Phoenix Suns.
The Lakers were hoping to re-sign Sessions and immediately contacted his representatives once free agency began. Since then, though, they have pulled off a sign-and-trade deal to land the services of veteran Steve Nash. With Nash now on the roster and promising young point guard Darius Morris back for another season, bringing back Sessions might no longer be a priority for the Lakers.
The Mavericks are looking towards Sessions as a fallback plan after losing their starting point guard of the past couple of seasons, Jason Kidd, to the New York Knicks.
Much like the Mavericks, the Suns turned their attention towards Sessions after the Lakers acquired Nash from them. They only received draft picks in the deal and are now devoid of a starting-caliber point guard.
With interest beginning to pick up, it might not be long before Sessions signs. The only lingering question is where the contract will come from. And apparently, the Rockets could be an option.
