The Houston Rockets are desperately trying to acquire Dwight Howard from the Orlando Magic. In order to do that, they would have to take bad contracts back. The contracts would be Jason Richardson, Chris Duhon, and Glen Davis. Imagine my surprise when I saw the Rockets official Twitter account decided to follow these four men Thursday night.
So what exactly does this mean? Probably not a lot but it gives the people trying to track down a Dwight Howard trade more ammo. Heck, it is going to get covered by blogs everywhere, including this one. If it is not a precursor to a trade, it is something else.
This shows how powerful Twitter can be. The fact that a team’s Twitter account started following four players is enough to get people to check things out. That is how far social media has come in sports. You use it to break stories and gather information. It can also be used for strange stuff like this.
Personally, I think this is the work of a very savvy social media team in Houston. They know that stuff like this will get checked out. It is a good way to help build hype or tweak the fans a bit. Nothing wrong with that in the scheme of things. It works for other team.
This is something to keep an eye on. If Howard is getting moved, he is going to end up in Houston. They can give up the most young players and picks. They can also take the crappiest contracts back. All three of those things are the Magic desperately need.
Remember this. If Howard does end up getting traded to the Rockets, the first heads up probably occurred on a team’s Twitter account. Try explaining that to your grandparents.
