NBA Rumors: Minnesota Timberwolves Could Bring In OJ Mayo

Surprisingly enough, OJ Mayo has not garnered a lot of interest on the free agent market.  That might be picking up as NBA rumors have the free agent guard attached to the Minnesota Timberwolves.  They have been trying to upgrade their wing positions and Mayo is a perfect fit for that.

OJ Mayo has a ton of talent but never really got the chance to shine early in his career.  If he were to go ahead and sign with the TWolves, he would certainly have that chance.  Remember that Brandon Roy isn’t exactly a walking clean bill of health.  There is a good chance that his knees are shot and that he can not play.  That means that Mayo would have a lot of chances to play.

The worst thing about this process for Mayo is that a lot of money is being left on the table.  Teams are simply not offering him the money that he thought he would get on the open market.  After an early binge, it seems like teams are holding onto funds and trying to get guys on minimum deals.  That is a good move for teams and a bad move for the players.

I expect that Mayo is going to get a little bit more than the minimum but something like the mid-level exception might be too much.  Some contender is going to get Mayo on a discount, which will be a bargain for them.  Expect more NBA rumors around Mayo to pop up as more players sign deals.
