On Thursday, the Indiana Pacers continued to make off-season moves, bolstering their already loaded roster by adding three new free agents to the team. Blake Ahearn, Sam Young, and Sundiata Gaines were all added to the franchise, which has made more moves in the past few months then they have in the last couple of seasons combined.
Young is a third-year veteran who can play at either the small forward or shooting guard position. Gaines is a point guard who will be entering his fifth season in the NBA. The well-traveled point guard has played 113 games as a pro, for four different NBA teams.
Blake Ahearn, who could be used at either guard position on the team, is by far the most experienced of Indiana’s three new free agents. Ahearn, 28, has played in only 19 games as an NBA player, but has been on three NBA teams before the Pacers. Ahearn has also spent time playing in Europe, and has been quite successful in the NBA Developmental League. Ahearn was the 2007 D-League Rookie of the Year, and has since then become the all-time leader in points in the NBA Developmental League.
These moves seem to signal that the Pacers, who are very heavy with forwards and wing players, are pushing to pump up their guard position for the near future. The starting lineup for the Indiana Pacers will remain intact from the end of last season, but the bench and rotation spots are up for grabs. The Pacers want players that are ready to fight and ready to help this team win. Let the competition begin.
