In a move to fill out the roster in time for training camp, the Miami Heat are bringing back Terrel Harris to the fold on September 10.
Harris was a surprise addition to the Heat roster when the 2011-12 NBA season began. Harris made the team and Miami waived Eddie House to make a spot for him.
Like fellow rookie Mickell Gladness, Harris played sparingly throughout the season. However as LeBron James and Dwyane Wade suffered early in the the season Harris was able to show flashes of why Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra and president Pat Riley chose him over House. No game was this more evident than on January 5 when Miami was on the road against the Atlanta Hawks. In a game where neither James or Wade were able to play that turned into a triple overtime thriller, Harris grabbed a career high 14 rebounds to go along with nine points.
Harris was kept able to stay on the roster for the duration of the season and the playoffs. He played in the final minutes of Game 5 of the NBA Finals when the Heat won the championship against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
In the off season Harris was not extended a qualifying offer from Miami and became a free agent. Harris played for the Heat in the Summer League.
While he’s back in the fold for training camp, Harris has a tougher path to making the roster this time around. This is mainly due to Miami’s desire to fortify their front line along with the arrival of Ray Allen via free agency. Allen is almost certain to become Wade’s primary backup. Harris does have point guard skills so he can possibly become the third string in that position behind Mario Chalmers and Norris Cole.
The path is hard for Harris, but he has surprised people before. Maybe he’ll do it again.
