Boston Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo organized team practices last week in Los Angeles to help build continuity before team training camp in Turkey in the beginning of October. He also reportedly organized a flag football game with the rest of the team and Josh Smith of the Atlanta Hawks. This got me thinking, who on the current Celtics team would be the best NFL player? I narrowed it down to three candidates: Rondo, Paul Pierce, and Jared Sullinger.
I think Rondo would make for quite an intriguing football player. He played quarterback in high school and was apparently recruited by high level programs before fully committing to basketball. I don’t know if he would necessarily fit well at quarterback because of his small stature, but I think as a change of pace running back, kick returner, and punt returner would be a good fit, very similar to current New Orleans Saints running back Darren Sproles. Rondo’s speed would always have to be accounted for.
I think Pierce would make for a great tight end, very similar to Jimmy Graham, also of the Saints. Graham played basketball at the University of Miami before ultimately switching to football. Pierce is a similar build to Graham and would be have a skill set that would be tough to stop, especially over the middle, where his size would impose corner backs and smaller safeties.
Can you imagine Sullinger as a defensive end? He’s built very similarly to current Arizona Cardinals defensive end, Calais Campbell. Sullinger is about 6’9, 250, and would be the type of lineman that can get to the quarterback frequently.
I think the winner of this category would be Pierce. I think his size and strength could translate to the NFL. Again, this is just a fun exercise as there obviously needs to be an appropriate time period of training to make the change. Sprinter Usain Bolt would be fun to think about playing in the NFL, but again he has no background in football and has not partaken in the training necessary to adjust to such a high contact sport.
