Philadelphia 76ers: SF Dorell Wright Rushing Into Rotation

By Tyler R. Tynes

There may be no other player on the Philadelphia 76ers roster who completely fits what the team goal for the off-season was besides small forward Dorell Wright. The goal was to bring in more athletic forwards with an advanced wingspan and someone who could stretch the floor in transition, well Wright is all of that and a bag of chips.

The 6-foot-9, Los Angeles native, is a streaky shooter but can bring good length and range to the floor for any NBA team. During the 2010-2011 NBA regular season, his best as a professional statistically, he led the NBA in three-pointers made (194) and attempted  (516) which were both franchise records for the Golden State Warriors. In the same season he averaged 16.4 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3 assists and nearly 2 steals per game in 38.4 minutes per game.

Going into training camp however, there is a much different feel and atmosphere around the franchise. The Sixers only have five returning players from last season and have numerous expectations to fill for a deprived basketball run city. Chemistry will be a huge factor going into the season and it’s already understood by players that some will have to sacrifice minutes for the good of the team. It seems that Wright already understands that more than any of the newcomers so far.

“The No. 1 thing is we’re all professionals with one goal and that’s to win,” Wright responded. “So if everyone is on the same page from day one and it’s all about winning, then this is going to be good.”

Wright, a former 1st round draft pick by the Miami Heat-where he played for six seasons- in 2004, will bring good assets to a forward deprived frontcourt for the Sixers roster. And to add to his shooting repertoire, he averages 20 points, 10 rebounds and shoots 54.5 percent from the three-point line against the Heat in 38 minutes of play, as of last season. A good stat line to have as the Sixers look to knock the current NBA Champions off of their, non-to-distant, pedestal.
