Brooklyn Nets: NBA Best Backcourt?

NBA training camps officially open on Tuesday October 2nd and there is no more fascinating and exciting team to watch than the Brooklyn Nets.  This team has changed everything in this organization over the summer and the expectations are high with the amount of talent that they acquired.

One big question that will be answered right away is “Who has the best backcourt?”

Billy King, the Nets GM, reiterates what he has said for a few months now since acquiring Joe Johnson in a trade to add to Deron Williams in a recent interview.

Jeff Zillgitt of USA TODAYinterviewed Billy King:

“I think we have the best backcourt in the NBA,” he said. “That’s no disrespect to Kobe Bryant and Steve Nash. I just think where these guys (Williams, Johnson) are in their careers, they are. What I really like is that they’re both very physical offensively and defensively. They’ll be the most physical backcourt in the league.”

“For the first time since I’ve been here, we’ll go to training camp without the swirl of trade rumors,” he said. “We’re going into training camp without any distractions. We can just focus on basketball, and our players can focus on basketball.

“For me, it’s going to be great to watch training camp and not get that look out of the corner of the eye from your players, wondering if they’re leaving or not.”

The Nets have many new pieces for Nets head coach Avery Johnson to mold into a contender and hopefully he will not have to do as much teaching of the game this year and can do more coaching.  This was a major problem as the Nets were a revolving door of players last year and it hurt continuity.

Johnson had to “teach” the game to all of the new faces that kept changing and couldn’t really implement his system due to the lack of practices and shortened season.  This will not be the case this year as he has two all stars in his backcourt in Williams and Johnson that have been through some wars in the NBA and it will make a huge difference.

The team will also not have to deal with daily questions about who the Nets might trade for as the current roster is set for the next four years.  This veteran backcourt that the Nets will roll out with to start the season is one major reason the future in Brooklyn is brighter than some are giving them credit for.  Williams and Johnson will be the leaders of this Nets team and as they go, the Nets will go.
