BOSTON- The Boston Celtics began their training camp this week. The expectations for the Boston Celtics are quite high after the team loaded their roster with solid players like Jason Terry, Jeff Green, Courtney Lee, Chris Wilcox, Jason Collins, Darko Milicic, Jared Sullinger, and Fab Melo. When a team adds that kind of complimentary pieces to an already strong nucleus of Paul Pierce,Kevin Garnett , Rajon Rondo, Avery Bradley, and Brandon Bass the expectations should be very high. After day one captain Paul Pierce let the world know the expectations are high amongst the team as well.
Pierce tweeted that he felt the Celtics were going to be scary good after watching the team practice for the first time. Pierce is letting the world know the Celtics have reloaded with a roster that can compete with any team in the NBA. In plain english Pierce feels the Boston Celtics of 2013 are ready for a run at a title.
Pierce has very good reason to believe in his team even after only one practice. The roster as stated earlier is loaded. Unlike the Celtics of previous years that lacked personnel, the 2013 incarnation of the Celtics can both match up and create match up problems for so many NBA teams. The simple fact of depth and diversity place Boston clearly in the upper echelon of the league with a shot at a title.
The Celtics problems of scoring depth were clearly solved this off-season. Pierce, Rondo, and KG will not have to carry the load like seasons past. The added scoring punch should mean a more rested and energetic effort from the newer “Big Three”. A rested Pierce, Rondo, and KG spells trouble for the rest of the East simply because banged up and tired renditions of this group have been dangerously close to getting the elusive Banner 18.
The Celtics bench can flat out score some points.Terry and Green by themselves are good enough on some nights to carry an offensive load. The Celtics also added Lee and Sullinger that are very capable of scoring the rock. Even guys like Wilcox and Milicic could give more offensive out put than guys like Ryan Hollins and an injured Jermaine O’Neal (Heck even a healthy O’Neal).
The biggest help this roster will give is on the defensive end. The team has more size in the middle with guys like Collins, Melo, and Milicic on board. This size should help in interior defense and rebounding. The extra fouls are also very helpful to allow Boston to play physical and make teams pay the price for coming into the paint for scoring attempts without fear of not having enough bigs to come into the game.
The Celtics also now have better defenders and more athleticism on defense in the back court with Terry and Lee on board. Terry may not be known for his defense, but anything would be better than the nothing Ray Allen provided last year on the defensive end. Lee is of course a longer guard that is regarded as a very solid defender.
The bottom line is Pierce is dead on with his assessment of the Celtics roster. The Celtics have the opportunity to be scary good. The season is around the corner with day one of training camp in the books and that means the world will find out soon enough how scary good this team can be. Remember Go Green Or Go Home!!!!!!!
