Boston Celtics: PG Rajon Rondo Believes This Is The Best Celtics Team, But They Also Have A Harder Road Ahead Than 08
BOSTON- Boston Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo turned some heads with his recent comments that this current Boston Celtics rendition is better than any other team that he has been on and that includes the 2008 title team. Some people will just brush off Rondo’s comments as the usual touting of his team and setting high expectations as a team leader. However, the fact is Rondo may indeed be right because the Boston Celtics did retool the roster with a lot of talented players that have made the Celtics both a deep and dangerous team.
The Boston Celtics for the first time in a long time have quality depth at not just a few positions, but every position. The guards are the strongest in terms of rotation in years with Rondo, Jason Terry, Courtney Lee, and Avery Bradley on board. These guards can pass, control the tempo, score, and defend. The Celtics have two great small forwards in Paul Pierce and Jeff Green. These two can score, defend, and rebound. The center and power forward spots have more depth than any team I can remember with Kevin Garnett, Chris Wilcox, Brandon Bass, Jared Sullinger, Jason Collins, Darko Millicic, and Fab Melo. this group can provide coach Doc Rivers with an amazing amount of ability to both match up with other teams lineups and create matchup issues of their own unlike any team that I can remember in recent years for the Celtics.
Before anyone is ready to crown the Celtics as the next NBA champions, there is also one large fact that Rondo did not point out. This fact might just be the Celtics undoing come playoff time. In 2008 there were really about six solid NBA contenders with even fewer of these contenders in the Celtics’s Eastern Conference. The fact is unlike previous NBA seasons the NBA has many very good teams. Any of these teams could if both health and luck factor in right could win an NBA title.
The East alone is now littered with solid teams. The Miami Heat are the defending champs and have a young and talented nucleus led by LeBron James. The New Jersey Nets got a lot better with a group that includes Deron Williams, Brooks Lopez, Joe Johnson, Gerald Wallace, and Kris Humphries. The Philadelphia 76ers also added monster Andrew Bynum to their lineup that made the Eastern Conference semis last year. The Indiana Pacers, Chicago Bulls, and New York Knicks are no pushovers either as evidence by their success last year and offseason additions.
The previous mentioned teams were just the Eastern Conference. The road in the West has a tough group with many loaded teams as well. A reloaded Los Angeles Lakers team is very dangverous. The Lakers added Dwight Howard and Steve Nash and only gave up really Bynum. The Oklahoma City Thunder are the defending Western Conference champs and lost no one from a talented team. The San Antonio Spurs, Dallas Mavericks, and the Los Angeles Clippers are also teams that are very dangerous come payoff time.
The bottom line is the Boston Celtics are very good and may be the best team Rondo has been on. The problem for Boston is the rest of the league has many very good to great teams. This means the road to the NBA title is also the hardest Rondo has ever encountered. The fact is the Celtics will be very hard pressed to secure Banner 18 with this type of competition. However, the Celtics do have a team that could get the job done with this deep and talented roster that Danny Ainge has assembled. The fact the Celtics have a chance is all anyone can ask entering a season. Remember Go Green Or Go Home!!!!!!!
