The first two days of the Brooklyn Nets training camp are in the books and the team is practicing hard and focusing on defense.  Coach Avery Johnson has stressed defense from the moment the team convened on Tuesday and he expects the Nets to be a top ten defensive team.

Johnson has been able to rely on Deron Williams to be the vocal leader and coach on and off the floor early in camp.  This is something that Johnson couldn’t really do last year due to the lack of talent on the roster and the limited practice time.  Those days are over with the Nets overhauled roster and his new all star backcourt mate Joe Johnson fitting in nicely.

Williams has been surprisingly easy going and funny with the media and even joked after the first session today that he and Johnson couldn’t coexist together.  Williams joked  “I just don’t think we’ll be able to play together. I don’t think it’s going to work, man. One of us is going to have to go.”

Johnson let the media know after practice that Avery has given he and Williams permission to rotate between point guard and shooting guard during games this year.

The last part of practice was specifically intense today as the team ran a drill that only allowed each team twelve seconds to shoot.  The play became a bit sloppy as each team turned it over and missed layups but the fast pace was what Johnson wanted to see.

The depth chart right now outside of the five starters looks to be CJ Watson, MarShon Brooks, Josh Childress, Mirza Teletovic and Andray Blatche.  The players that are on the outside looking in right now are Reggie Evans, Tornike Shengalia and Keith Bogans but these things change quickly and camp is just beginning.

Nets Notes: Tyshawn Taylor did not practice again today due to a strained right quadricep.  Blatche was held out of practice as well with back spasms and Johnson stated they were both held out as a precaution.  Blatche should be back tomorrow and Taylor may suit up for the first time on Friday.
