As i’m writing this there is a NBA preseason game on right now which only means one thing: TRAINING CAMP. And yes ladies and gentlemen, training camp is fully underway with preseason games happening right before our eyes. The Memphis Grizzlies are preparing for their fourth year with the Mike Conley – Rudy Gay – Zach Randolph – Marc Gasol core and this year it’s no more flying under the radar. This team has to be legit. Here are a few things to look at during training camp and with the season about to be underway:
Probably the most important tidbit of the entire training camp and the theme of the up-and-coming season is Zach Randolph saying that he is 100% percent coming into the season. Whether Randolph will be up to his 2010-2011 tricks will be interesting to see start of the season.
Forward Rudy Gay wasn’t too happy about being cut from Team USA and is using it as motivation for the year. “They can word it however they want. Being left off, being cut, whatever,” Gay said. “I feel like that’s one of the things I can keep in my mind to make me move on.”
Rudy also mentioned him bulking up and being able to play a little bit of power forward this season.
Rookie Tony Wroten changed his jersey number from #8 to #1.
Second year guard Josh Selby has a small ankle sprain that shouldn’t keep him out long. He says he should return by Monday.
Guard Mike Conley has put on a couple pounds also in preparing himself to be able to defend bigger guards “Regardless of what critics say, I feel that way about myself. I’ve got to be able to guard these guys. I’ve got to be able to defend them in crunch time. Being stronger in your legs and upper body will help. I’m already a good defensive player. I’ve just got to be able to hold my weight against the bigger guards.”
Ronald “Flip” Murray was invited to training camp. At age 33, this will be his 9th season in the NBA. It should be noted that Murray hasn’t played in a NBA game since the 2009-2010 season.
Noted right before media day, Darrell Arthur is out for at least four weeks with a leg injury.
