If first impressions mean anything, it looks like the Cleveland Cavaliers have a dynamic backcourt in Kyrie Irving and Dion Waiters that will give opposing teams fits for years to come.

The Wine squad led by Irving and Waiters looked solid in a 54-44 loss to the Gold Squad led by Omri Casspi and C.J. Miles, who would both score nine points.

In front of a estimated crowd of over 10,000 at Quicken Loans Arena in downtown Cleveland, the inter-squad scrimmage(free to the public) gave many in Cleveland a chance to see the 2012-13 version of the Wine and Gold up close and in person.

Judging from early returns, there were some notable highlights, but the team as a whole is still a work in progress.

Irving, the 2011-12 NBA Rookie Of The Year, looked like he was in early season form in driving to the hoop, would lead all scorers with 13 points and also grab five rebounds.

Waiters, the fourth overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft looked like the slashing, attacking guard that the Cavs selected in scoring 12 points and attacking the rim fearlessly.

Unfortunately, for Waiters he would also be on the opposite end of Tristan Thompson’s highlight-reel worthy block on a drive to the basket, that would land into the first row.

Other players that looked impressive in the inter-squad team scrimmage were undrafted rookie power forward Kevin Jones who would score six points and grab five rebounds, and guard Jeremy Pargo who would score seven points.

In getting the first glimpse of a possible Irving-Waiters backcourt, Cleveland has a duo that can both shoot the ball, drive the lane and attack the rim effectively, don’t be surprised if the Cavaliers become a team to watch in 2012-13.
