If a midseason trade were to occur, who on the current Boston Celtics roster would be the team’s best trade bait for an upgrade to the roster? Obviously teams will want point guard Rajon Rondo and rightfully so, but unless the Celtics are getting a top ten player in return, I highly doubt the team would look to deal Rondo. Kevin Garnett would obviously be coveted, but unless the team absolutely flames out and is looking at a lottery draft pick, then I’d have to think the team would hold onto KG.
The two names that I think could be most realistic might surprise you: Paul Pierce and Jared Sullinger. Pierce has seen his name in many trade rumors over the years and the Celtics have certainly been open to trading him. I think he still has enough trade value around the league to get a nice package back in return. Obviously like Garnett, if the team struggles, then trading Pierce would be a lot easier. Trading him while in contention would be a tad trickier, but there could be ways to pull it off. Again, this would only be if the team was able to upgrade the roster, and at the same time collecting youth in the process. I always thought a Pierce for Rudy Gay trade with the Memphis Grizzlies was a good move for the Celtics. It would be much tougher to pull off now with the Celtics having limited cap space. The reason I like Gay is because he is much younger than Pierce and is a similar scorer to the Celtics great. Gay might be slightly overpaid by NBA standards, but he still would allow the team to extend their championship window while still remaining competitive. There will certainly be options to trade Pierce, but I think the odds are slim that we see any traction on that front.
Sullinger would also be a very attractive piece to teams around the league, combining his youth and low salary. He’s expected to perform at a high level so if the team were looking for the type of player that it could use to get over the hump, I’m sure they would consider it. The thing is though, typically that type of player is a league veteran, and the Celtics don’t need any more of those.
If the Celtics were to make a blockbuster mid-season trade, these two players could be included, but again, I highly doubt anything will actually take place.
