NBA Dallas Mavericks

Delonte West’s Outburst Cost Him a Suspension

The Dallas Mavericks suspended Delonte West indefinitely, according to reports, after the Mavericks destroyed the Houston Rockets last night 123-104.

Coach Rick Carlisle told ESPNDallas that the suspension was due to conduct detrimental to the team.

West tweeted after the game, “Sorry moma…” and “I showed off on ur birthday again…” West has had some problem in the past. Back in 2010 he was suspended for the first ten games of the regular season after pleading guilty to weapons charges in Maryland. Also back in 2010 rumors were flying around the internet about him having sexual encounter’s with then teammate LeBron James’ mother.

Apparently after the game West had an outburst in the locker room which caused the suspension from the Mavericks. West had 2 assists, 1 rebound and 2 points in 16 minutes during the game. He has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder several years ago which could explain his outburst in the past with his former teams.

West is entering his tenth year in the NBA and second for the Mavericks and outburst like he did will not be tolerated by coach Carlisle or by any Maverick staff member. Nobody outside the Dallas locker room knows exactly what was said during the outburst, but whatever it was it was bad enough to get coach Carlisle and the Mavericks to suspend him indefinitely.

If West’s suspension forces him to miss any regular season game it may not mean too much for the Mavericks. He does have that defensive attitude that any team would want on the floor, but he has not been much of a production for the Dallas Mavericks. Last season he only averaged 7.5 points, 2.0 assists, 1.8 rebounds and 0.8 steals per game in an average of 22 minutes a game. The Mavericks have other players who will be able to fill up the spot if West is not able to go for the start of the season like Dominique Jones, Jared Cunningham and Rodrigue Beaubois.

With that said if West does not clean up his act then I would not be surprise if the Mavs just put West on waivers and have another team pick him up if they want to go through what he brings off the court. If West does not clean up his act then he will fall like any other NBA player who had the same problems. However, with the organization the Mavericks operate they will try with all their power to give Delonte West all the help he needs to become a better person and a better basketball player.
