The people at Circle Centre Mall in downtown Indianapolis had no idea what they were in for. On Sunday afternoon, a few of the Indiana Pacers 2012 rookie draft class, and some of the Indiana Pacers cheerleaders, were at the mall to sign autographs and to do a ticket giveaway. The Pacers and Pacemates were giving out tickets to the Indiana Fevers’ WNBA Finals game on Sunday night, as well as tickets to the Indiana Pacers home opener at Bankers Life Fieldhouse early next month.
Music broke out in the midst of the hustle and bustle of the metropolitan mall, and Roy Hibbert of the Indiana Pacers lit up the food court like it was a dance floor. Hibbert and his “Area 55” Indiana Pacers fans, shocked and rocked the crowd in attendance, with a flash mob dance routine that literally came out of nowhere. Hibbert, dressed in an all-white suit and sparkling gold sneakers, shook what his momma gave him, alongside several members of Area 55, who were all decked out in yellow Indiana Pacers Hibbert t-shirts.
The “Area 55” initiative was started by Hibbert several seasons ago, giving attention to the most outrageous and audacious Indiana Pacers fans. Each Season, Hibbert holds auditions, and buys out a section of season tickets, for the most loud and proud Pacers fans he can find. Area 55 is noticeably audible during Indiana home games, and even during the Indiana Fever’s run to their 2012 WNBA Championship.
More and more, Hibbert and the Indiana Pacers have been endearing themselves to their fans and community. This team is more than just a franchise, it’s a family. As the old saying goes, in 49 states, it’s just basketball. This is Indiana.
