Dirk Who? The Dallas Mavericks showed a great example of what NBA Basketball is all about. The Mavs started the season on the road against the Los Angeles Lakers. The Lakers came into the season with high expectations with Dwight Howard, Steve Nash and Kobe Byrant who are supposedly the “Big Three” out in the Western Conference.
However, The Mavericks showed tonight that you do not need “Superstars” to win a basketball game. The Mavs were without Dirk Nowitzki and Chris Kaman and everybody that coach Rick Carlisle put on to the floor all stepped up in their own way. They had six players score in double figures with Darren Collison leading the way with 17 points. Again, this was against the team that had all the hype coming into the season.
The players that the Mavs had on the court tonight were: Collison, O.J. Mayo, Shawn Marion, Elton Brand, Branden Wright, Eddy Curry, Vince Carter, Jae Crowder, Rodrigue Beaubois and Dahntay Jones. Granted Jones did not do much with no points scored. However, everybody else at least 7 points or more.
That team I just listed above does that look like an all-star type team? No! The fact is that each player who were on the court played as a team. Everybody shared the ball and everybody had their touch. If a team like this could dominate a team like the Lakers then Mavs fans have one heck of a season to be looking forward to.
What does this mean for the Mavs Nation? This may be one game out of eighty-two, but the way the Mavs played tonight is the way that they will be playing throughout the season. Remember this was a game without their superstar, Dirk Nowitzki. Once he returns at the end of November or early December the Mavs will have a team where the whole roster will be able to provide points, rebounds, assists, steals, etc. You name it the Mavs will bring it.
One surprise in particular tonight was rookie, Jae Crowder, and Rodrigue Beaubois. The way Crowder played tonight, scoring 11 points, is the way that Mavs fans should expect him to play. He will become better and better throughout the month of November.
For Beaubois, tonight showed that when he is not injured he can be very productive. He scored 11 points and had 5 assists. If he can stay away from his injuries then Roddy B will finally be free.
However, with that said this is only game one out of eight-two, so there is really not much to judge. The Mavs are heading out tonight to get ready to face the Utah Jazz in Salt Lake City and tomorrow’s game could be a totally different outcome in what tonight’s game was against the Lakers.
Nevertheless, it’s going to take at least a month to judge this team and by then Nowitzki will be back. Nobody knows if the return of Nowitzki will hurt the team or make them even more dangerous.
Although, this is only the beginning of the season after watching tonight’s game the way the Mavs were playing reminded me of the Detroit Pistons when they won back to back NBA Titles in 1989 and 1990. The Mavs have one All-Star in Nowitzki and a lot of talent around him who all can produce as the “wingman” to him.
The season is far from over and if the Mavs continue to play as they did tonight then they should be okay once Nowitzki returns from his surgery recovery. As long as Carlisle is coaching in Dallas then the Mavericks will be just fine and will be able to compete with whoever they put onto the court against any team in the NBA.
