Chris Paul and Kyrie Irving Showdown

The Los Angeles Clippers will take on the Cleveland Cavaliers tonight at the Staples Center. This match-up for many years has never been appealing to the majority of NBA fans, but things have changed. It should now be a must see match-up thanks to the starting point guards, Chris Paul and Kyrie Irving.

Paul is always mentioned when talking about the league’s best point guards, playing in his eighth NBA season. On the other hand, Irving is slowly but surely making his way into that same conversation, after winning the NBA Rookie of the Year award last season.

The Cavaliers drafted Irving with the number one overall pick during the 2011 NBA draft. (The Cavaliers got that draft pick from the Clippers in a trade four months before the draft, huge coincidence.) So far it’s safe to say that the Cavaliers made the right decision, drafting Irving to make him their franchise player. In 51 games last season he averaged 18.5 points, 5.4 assists, and 3.7 rebounds per game. He was quickly becoming one of the most exciting players to watch in the NBA at just 19-years-old.

As of right now Paul has a lot more on his resume than Irving, obviously. However, Paul also won the NBA Rookie of the Year award back during the 2005-2006 season, while playing with the New Orleans Hornets. In 78 games that season he averaged 16.1 points, 7.8 assists, and 5.1 rebounds per game. He has only gotten better since then, making the NBA all-star team five times.

The match-up tonight between these two point guards should be at the top of every NBA fans agenda. This will be the first time that the two players will actually go head-to head, with Irving missing this game last season. It could also be the start of something special, possibly making this a must see match-up for many years to come.

Paul will clearly have the upper hand in this game with more experience, a better supporting cast, and a competitive nature that is second to none in this league. If he thinks for one second that Irving got the best of him on a single possession this will turn into a Paul against Irving showdown. Trust me, that will happen at least once tonight because Irving can flat-out score the basketball.

So if you love basketball and want to see an entertaining match-up tonight make sure to watch the Clippers take on the Cavaliers, this is not a joke. Honestly, I never thought that I would be counting down the hours to a Cavaliers and Clippers game. (Wait, is my life that boring? Nah. I’m sure other people are counting down, right?)
