Cleveland Cavaliers Young Backcourt Flourishes Against Los Angeles Clippers

The Cleveland Cavaliers beat the Los Angeles Clippers last night, 108-101. It was a game that the Clippers never looked to have control over thanks to 25 turnovers, bad defense, and terrific play by the Cavaliers young backcourt.

Everyone knew that Kyrie Irving would get his points, simply because Uncle Drew gets buckets. The Clippers had no answer for the reigning NBA Rookie of the Year, as he scored 16 points in the first quarter. The 20-year old point guard ended the game with 24 points and 10 assists, while out playing his counterpart Chris Paul in the process, who finished the game with 17 points and 9 assists.

It wasn’t just Irving that the Clippers couldn’t stop last night. The Cavaliers introduced their other guard to the Clippers, rookie Dion Waiters. The fourth overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft this summer proved that he was more than worthy of the pick, at least for one night. Waiters was putting on his own personal show at the Staples Center, scoring 28 points on 10-17 shooting from the field and 7-11 from behind-the-arc. There were a couple of times where he hit consecutive three pointers in this game and you just knew it was his night.

When both Waiters and Irving got going you just had the feeling that the Clippers were done. There was no way that anything was going get in the way of this special night for Cleveland fans. I honestly think that this was the first time, since LeBron James fled Cleveland for the Miami Heat, that Cavalier fans were able to go to bed happy.

Irving is on his way to becoming a top point guard in this league in the next couple of years, if he isn’t already. While Waiters will develop into a pretty good player and have a couple of more games like last night playing alongside of Irving. This duo will be fun to watch throughout this season and maybe for years to come.

This backcourt should have Cleveland fans feeling ecstatic after last night’s game, because the future of this team looks very bright.
