A lot of people wondered how well the dynamic between Kobe Bryant and Dwight Howard would work. If you base your assumptions off of five games, it does not look like the two are doing so hot as teammates. The Los Angeles Lakers are 1-4 and it looks like Howard might not be taking it as seriously as he should.
“I think sometimes as a team we got to be able to not really show our frustrations that much,” Howard said after L.A. fell to 1-12 with their preseason record included. “A lot of the guys look at me and Kobe and they feed off us, so we have to do a better job of keeping our frustrations on the inside and just playing through it so our teammates won’t get down on themselves. So, we just got to do a better job at that.
“I know [Kobe] was a little frustrated tonight. He wants to win just as bad as all of us do, but we just got to stay together, remember it’s a process, and stay focused.”
So we have Howard telling Kobe how to feel. You know, the guy who has never been close to a title (that Finals appearance was pretty much a joke) telling the man with five rings how to feel. Kobe hates losing so this stretch has to be awful for him right now. He understands what it takes to win and how to go about it. I do not think having Howard come in and tell him to relax is going to help matters.
People might be focusing on the issue of Mike Brown but this underlying tension should be what is focused on. Howard has to get on board with this stuff. It may not look like a shot at Kobe, but Kobe might see it as such. A win streak will help everyone forget this but expect this to dominate headlines for a day or so.
