NBA Power Rankings: Week 2
2012-13 NBA Power Rankings: WEEK 2
The first month of the 2012-13 NBA season is almost over and there have been a lot of surprises early on. Who would have thought that the New York Knicks would have gone 6-0 to start off the season before losing their first game.
How about the Memphis Grizzlies? They are in first place of the Western Conference at 8-1 and they have been winning each of their games in convincing ways.
Then there are the defending Western Champions, Oklahoma City Thunder, who have not had much media attention this year. They stand at 8-3 in the West and looks like they will stay the underdog throughout this NBA season.
It has been an exciting first month of the season with Mike D'Antoni still waiting to coach his first game with the Los Angeles Lakers. They do seem like they have been playing better since the firing of Mike Brown. With Brown they started the season 1-4 and since then they are 3-1.
Who knows if D'Antoni's style of play will improve or hurt the Lakers this season. I guess everybody will have to wait and find out to see if they made a mistake in not bringing back Phil Jackson.
Then of course there is the defending NBA Champions, Miami Heat. They have started the season at 8-3. That's 3 loses this season for them meaning that the almighty Heat will not win over 80 games this year.
Joking aside, the Heat look very good and very unstoppable. Before the season started I predicted that they will finish this season 65-17 and they are on their way. It will not shock me one bit if they end up breaking the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls record of 72-10.
Although it is only the start of the NBA season there is still a long way to go. Here are week 2 of the NBA Power Rankings.
CHECK OUT THE LAST WEEKS' RANKINGS TO COMPARE THEM TO THIS WEEKS
#28 Cleveland Cavaliers 2-8
Most of the Cleveland Cavaliers loses have been horrible. Most of it they have been losing in double digit. I hate to see this young bunch of talent go to waste, but I do believe that they will turn it around this season. It may not be by much, but it will be the start of their future.
LAST WEEK RANK #22
#26 Toronto Raptors 3-7
The Toronto Raptors may be 3-7, but Raptors fans look at it this way. They have won 2 of their last three games. They could be 4-6, but that tough lost in 3 overtimes against Utah was a bummer.
LAST WEEK RANK #28
#25 Orlando Magic 3-6
The Orlando Magic started the season 2-0, but are 1-6 since. Maybe they will get some wins in the coming weeks. After their road game on Monday they begin a 5 game home stand.
LAST WEEK RANK #26
#24 Charlotte Bobcats 4-4
Look who keeps moving up in the Power Rankings. The Charlotte Bobcats are just 3 wins away in tying their same amount of wins they had last year and it's only November.
LAST WEEK RANK #25
#23 New Orleans Hornets 3-5
The New Orleans Hornets move way down in the Power Rankings. Losing 3 straight will do it for them.
LAST WEEK RANK #14
#22 Phoenix Suns 4-7
A tough week for the Phoenix Suns with their last three loses coming against the Lakers, Heat and Bulls. It's not going to get any easier for them. They are going to need to win their next two games at home before heading off for a 6 game road trip.
LAST WEEK RANK #17
#21 Indiana Pacers 4-7
A rough week for Indiana, but at least they had an impressive win over the Dallas Mavericks. Maybe they can get some “W's” when they play the Wizards and Hornets this week.
LAST WEEK RANK #21
#20 Denver Nuggets 4-6
The Denver Nuggets have lost three straight games after starting the season 4-3. The main reason why they fall 9 spots in this week's rankings.
LAST WEEK RANK #11
#19 Atlanta Hawks 4-4
An impressive win against the Portland Trail Blazers last week. Maybe they can get three more wins against the Magic, Wizards and Bobcats this week.
LAST WEEK RANK #23
#18 Portland Trail Blazers 5-5
A three game winning streak jumps them up to 6 spots in the rankings. Maybe winning 3 straight games did that to them. Especially an impressive win over the Bulls Sunday night. However, their next 8 of 9 games are on the road and if they win most of those games they could keep jumping up in these rankings.
LAST WEEK RANK #24
#17 Houston Rockets 4-6
Does having James Harden do anything for these Houston Rockets? It could be that talks about Jeremy Lin have pretty much died since being in Houston.
LAST WEEK RANK #13
#16 Utah Jazz 5-6
The Jazz go 2-2 on their four game road trip. Now they can rest at home this Thanksgivings week with their next opponents being the Rockets and Kings.
LAST WEEK RANK #20
#15 Golden State Warriors 5-5
A tough lost for the Golden State Warriors Sunday night at Oklahoma. They are at 5-5, but with a tough schedule ahead of them they could go back to under .500.
LAST WEEK RANK #18
#14 Boston Celtics
The Celtics have won 4 of their last 6 games, but one of those loses game to a 1 win Pistons team. That's why they only raise one rank this week.
LAST WEEK RANK #15
#13 Dallas Mavericks 6-5
The Mavs ended their 4 game road skid this past Saturday in Cleveland and now look to take advantage of their 4 game home stand starting Monday night.
LAST WEEK RANK #12
#12 Minnesota Timberwolves 5-4
It is starting to look like that the Minnesota Timberwolves are missing Kevin Love right now. They have lost 3 of their last 4 games. After their home game on Wednesday they will be playing 6 of 7 games on the road. Tough couple of weeks ahead of them.
LAST WEEK RANK #9
#11 Chicago Bulls 5-5
The Bulls are 1-2 so far on their road trip and have two more road games to go. It will not come easy since those road games are against the Milwaukee Bucks and Houston.
LAST WEEK RANK #6
#9 Philadelphia 76ers 6-4
The Sixers have won their last 5 of 7 games and look to be a very legit team out in the Eastern Conference. However, lets see how long they can last without Andrew Bynum who will be out longer than expected due to a “bowling injury”.
LAST WEEK RANK #8
#8 Los Angeles Lakers 5-5
The Lakers are still awaiting for their newly hired coach, D'Antoni, to arrive. Nevertheless, since the firing of Brown the Lakers have gone from 1-4 to 5-5.
LAST WEEK RANK #10
#7 Milwaukee Bucks 6-2
Despite an impressive 6-2 start for the Milwaukee Bucks the wins have come against teams that are at the same level as they are. The two loses came against the Celtics and Grizzlies. I do not expect the Bucks to stay high in the Power Rankings.
LAST WEEK RANK #19
#6 Los Angeles Clippers
It's not that the Clippers are doing bad for them to get bumped back one in the rankings; it's just other teams are more impressive right now. The Clippers test will start tonight though as they begin a 4 game road trip starting with the San Antonio Spurs.
LAST WEEK RANK #5
#5 Miami Heat 8-3
The Heat finished 4-2 on their 6 game road trip with loses caused by the Grizzlies and Clippers. Their next 12 of 14 games will be played at home. Let see how high the Heat can rise in the standings.
LAST WEEK RANK #4
#4 Oklahoma City Thunder 8-3
If they could have held on to win against the Grizzlies last week then the Thunder would have moved up, but since that was their only lost in 8 games they stay where they are. The Schedule is looking nice for them though with their next 4 of 6 games at home.
LAST WEEK RANK #4
#3 San Antonio Spurs 8-2
A tough end of the month for the Spurs. After they face a tough Clippers team Monday night they will be heading to Boston Wednesday night to begin a 6 game road trip.
LAST WEEK RANK #1
#2 New York Knicks 7-1
The Knicks undefeated record came to a close this past Friday night against the #1 team on this ranking. Starting the season 7-1 is an impressive start for this New York team, but with their next 5 of 6 games on the road it will determine if this team is for real.
LAST WEEK RANK #2
#1 Memphis Grizzlies
Look at these dangerous Grizzlies. This Memphis team could easily be undefeated with a 9-0 record. Their only lost was their first game of the season and since then they have been unstoppable. They took care of the unbeaten Knicks last week and they have a comfortable ride ahead of them with the start of a 5 game home stand.
LAST WEEK RANK #7
