As the Chicago Bulls try to navigate their way through this two-game losing streak the cries for the the return of Derrick Rose are getting louder. It seems as though every time the Bulls win we say, “they can maintain without him” but every time they lose like clockwork we yell, “it’s all because they don’t have Rose.” The truth of the matter is as commendable as the Bulls effort without Rose has been they’re just not the same team without him.
The city of Chicago and Bulls fans all around have this crazy idea that when Rose returns he’s magically going to change everything. Like this one man band is going to change the landscape of the Eastern Conference. Like powerhouses such as the Miami Heat, Boston Celtics and New York (Knicks or Nets take your pick), none of them will stand a chance because Rose has returned. They have this idea that he’s all they need to succeed. And although the Bulls have had winning seasons with Rose as their leader they’ve come up short. Why? Because as talented as Rose is he can’t do it alone. He needs help.
When teams have doubled Rose, forcing others to create for themselves the Bulls have struggled. While other superstars have co-stars to help them night in and night out Rose has himself and 4 other guys he’s bringing along for the ride. Yes, players like Joakim Noah, Loul Deng, and Carlos Boozer are good role players but we’re talking about another superstar here. Let’s look at the list shall we…
Miami has LeBron James, Dwayne Wade, and Chris Bosh; Boston has Rajon Rondo, Paul Pierce, and Kevin Garnett; the Knicks have Carmelo Anthony, Amare Stoudemire (when healthy) and Tyson Chandler. Every team has their own ”Big Three” meanwhile the Bulls have a “Big One”.
I know. I know. The Bulls don’t need superstars right? They’re the definition of teamwork, they don’t need all the Hollywood lights to win. That’s all I keep hearing from the Bulls faithful. And while you’re right they don’t need another superstar to win regular season games they do, however, need one to win a championship.
You can’t ignore the star power that teams have this season and will have for seasons to come. Chicago is going to have to get Rose some help. In the meantime fans can pretend that he’s the savior or that order will rightfully be restored in Bulls Nation once he returns, but it won’t. Chicago will continue to be the bridesmaid and never the bride until Rose is paired with another superstar.
The pressure of an entire city is on this one man’s shoulders and it’s not fair.
