The Boston Celtics face the Minnesota Timberwolves this week and of course, that means Kevin Love makes a visit to the Boston Garden. That is a sight I am sure Celtics head coach Doc Rivers is not thrilled about as Love has been a beast since returning from injury a few weeks ago. Love is averaging 22 points and 15 rebounds per game this season, highlighted by a monster performance last week against the Sacramento Kings where he posted 23 points and 24 rebounds in a win on the road.
Love is clearly one of the best players in the NBA and always poses match-up problems for opposing teams. He can play inside and out and is especially effective at bringing the opposing big men outside the paint when he is on the offensive end. He is a great shooter and can make three pointers when left open.
Who guards Love for the Celtics this week? It will be a very challenging match-up for the team and expect Rivers to use a committee approach to keep the forward in check. The Celtics typically are of the mindset that as long as you let the other team’s best player get his and everyone else is held in check, then you will be alright. They cannot have Andrei Kirilenko or another player go off against them. This is a problem that has plagued the team against the Miami Heat in particular. It always seems like some no named guy hurts the team, whether that is Shane Battier or Norris Cole.
This is obviously just a regular season game so the Celtics will not put more emphasis into this game then they would for a playoff game, but it will still be interesting to see how the team tries and contains Love the best they can.
