For the last couple of years the Los Angeles Lakers have come up short of their ultimate goal to win a championship and a big reason why is because the lack of bench production.
Last season the Lakers bench was just down right pathetic and that led to the team making acquisitions to try and fix that problem. Over the off-season the Lakers brought in Jodie Meeks and Antwan Jamison to help fix that problem. Since the coaching change both players have played very well in their roles and have seemingly found their way. There’s much more freedom offensively for these guys to play now than in the previous system implemented by Mike Brown.
All the contending teams out there have consistent bench players for their teams that contribute more times than not. The Lakers are going to need Jamison and Meeks to play very well this year because the west is wide open.
Also we have to remember that the last two NBA champions got significant production from their bench when they needed it. When the Lakers needed their bench to come through the last two years it didn’t happen.
The starters won’t be able to perform every game and there comes a time when bench players make their mark on a game and even a postseason series. Guys like Jamison and Meeks are two guys that are capable of swinging a game with their offensive abilities. They will also have the chance to do so this season and they will be one of the reasons if this team will sink or swim.
