Chicago Bulls: Luol Deng Has To Play Better

Luol Deng is long, athletic, and versatile; but he’s also inconsistent, passive, and did I mention inconsistent?

One night Deng will drop 20 plus points and the next only four. It’s this inconsistency that makes me question him. I don’t question his athleticism and ability to play the game of basketball; I however, question his ability to play at a consistent level every single night.

We should expect at least 20 points and eight rebounds from Deng every night like clockwork. But instead we’re left guessing and wondering which Luol is going to show up. Will it be the one who is aggressive on offense and a bulldog on defense? Or will it be the one who shys away from contact, and passes up open shots? It’s a toss up.

In the Chicago Bulls Monday night loss to the Memphis Grizzlies Deng was two of seven from the field in the first half and ended the game four of 17.

Four of 17?

According to my calculations that’s 23 percent, which is unacceptable. In the absence of Derrick Rose, every Bulls’ player needs to step up and practice consistency; Deng is no expection.

Luol who averages 17.8 points had only 11 points, and one assist. It’s almost as though Deng doesn’t know how talented he is. Every now again he will show flashes of greatness, but the Bulls need more from him. He’s got to be more aggressive, and make up his mind that he’s going to be scoring threat. Teams should have to game plan against him night in and night out,  however they don’t because he’s not productive on a consistent basis.

Imagine if Luol had the “Kobe Bryant mindset” where he truly believed he was the best player on the court. He would be deadly. He has the tools, but seems to lack the confidence. In order for the Bulls to stay above .500 Deng is going to have to produce. He’s got to take accountability and be more aggressive, and consistent or else the Bulls are going to struggle.

Wake up Luol.
