The Chicago Bulls have been one of the biggest surprises in the NBA so far. They lost star point guard Derrick Rose to a devastating injury in last year’s playoffs and many analysts figured this would be a very difficult season for the franchise. Boy have they been wrong. They are currently 14-10 and sit comfortably as the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference.
The majority of the credit obviously has to go to head coach Tom Thibodeau. It is no surprise how successful he has been during his brief tenure as the Bulls lead man. He was hired from the Boston Celtics as an assistant for Doc Rivers and there are obviously not many better people to learn from than Rivers. Rivers is as good as they come and is arguably the second best coach in the league after Greg Poppovich.
The Bulls have also gotten really nice seasons from Marco Belinelli and Nate Robinson so far. Both players were signed off the scrap heap this past summer and have given the team great value. They are averaging 20 points a game combined and have both become key members of the rotation.
What is great about this Bulls team is that when you look over the roster, it doesn’t look very good without Rose. That is why we do not judge teams on paper. If we judged this team that way, then they would be a lottery team.
The Bulls are off to a great start compared to where they were picked in the pre-season. If they can get Rose healthy before the playoffs, then they will have a great shot at upsetting a top three seed in the East.
